We've got some beautiful lambswool scarves in the shop at moment - including these very special ones from Dundee based knitwear designer Hilary Grant.

Each one is knitted by Hilary on a hand-operated domestic knitting machine before being finished by hand.

They come either finished with lambswool pom poms or as continuous circle scarves long enough to be wrapped around your neck up to 3 times - keeping you super snug!

A little late I know, but at last a pic of my attempt at a Donna Wilson creature (from her The Knitted Odd Bod Bunch book). My first attempt at knitting since I triumphantly completed a (well loved) Mondrian styley mohair jumper circa 1982, aged around 12 (it would seem I peaked too soon in my knitting career). The needles were finally picked up again with the arrival of a number of small people this last wee while. Bunga Bear has gone to live with young Fynn, and if his parents ever forget his date of birth they will find it clumsily 'tattooed' on his rear end. Now on to trying to knit with four needles. If anyone has any tips they would be gratefully received!

There is a very good interview with Donna Wilson here where she talks about her exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, her influences, and the growing of her business. Well worth a watch.

Whether you fancy yourself as a wine buff or, like me, just like drinking the stuff and haven't really a scooby beyond the general (and generally ignored) rule of drinking red with red meat and white with chicken & fish, then we have THE tea-towel for you!! Following on from showing us the way with seasonal foods, designer Stuart Gardiner has now turned his attention to enhancing our wine/food appreciation!

There's a version for red & white wine lovers, and they are jam-packed with recommendations for which wines go best with which food/dishes/tastes along with other useful pointers, and which combinations you should absolutely avoid! All that and it dries your dishes too!! Would make a perfect present for just about anyone who partakes in the drinking of the old vino (maybe with a bottle wrapped up inside).

I've got a bit behind in showing off some of the new things that have been arriving in the shop recently, so to get back in the groove, here are a few of the lovely new things we have in from boo vake favourite Donna Wilson!

First timers at boo vake are Big Ted (pictured at top), who is a bit of a stunner (& rather large, measuring in at a height of 83cm), gorgeous arm-warmers & mittens, and mixed packs of cards, perfect for sending or for framing. We also have a number of rather stunning baby blankets.

Taking of babies... spurred on by a number of friends having (& about to be having) babies this last wee while I've finally got round to knitting something from Donna's book The Knitted Odd-bod Bunch . First time I've picked up knitting needles since circa 1982 so needless to say 'he' has some imperfections but I'm hoping that might add to the 'charm'! Will maybe post a pic after said 'odd-bod' is safely in it's new home.

Often I'm asked how I choose things for the shop. Sometimes it's quite a quick immediate process - I see something I think would fit the shop, I get in touch, and I order straight away. More often than not though I see something I really like (and would fit the shop) but it's just not the right time, I can't give it the space or it's just not what I 'need' at that time. These products /designers/artists/makers then go into my 'wishlist', existing in notebooks, my computer or just in my head, and remain there until an opportunity presents. I have a very big wishlist. And sometimes an opportunity never presents.

Which brings me on to the beautiful original prints we have in now from printmaker Dee Beale. They were indeed a long time in the coming. I bought one as a present for a friend a couple of years ago (the one above infact) and was so impressed that I immediately had Dee on that 'wishlist', but as our space for artwork is so limited in the shop, there she remained until very recently.
So we are very pleased indeed to have Dee's work here in boo vake at last. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do.

Well, we've gone and done it now. And who'd have thought that it would be so pain free and actually quite enjoyable.

Here it all is in pictorial form from young Skye and Fraser. As you can see from Fraser's artists impression we are indeed two bottles of beer (man beer & lady beer). And despite Skye's concerns no monsters did in fact appear (apparently).

Loving the new colours of the latest Creamola Foam design from Gillian Kyle (very boo vake). And, as I was saying to a very lovely customer just minutes ago, the colour orange - not only is it warm & mood-lifting, but goes with just every other colour imaginable (in my mind anyhow). We have these new tea-towels & aprons from Gillian's new organic cotton range in the shop now. The tea-towel also works well stretched over a canvas (like wot we have in our shop window at the moment).

I'm a big fan of trays and a big admirer of the work of British designers Hannah Dipper & Robin Farquar (aka People Will Always Need Plates), and happily these two weaknesses of mine can be well and truly satisfied with the arrival in the shop of PWANP's wonderfully colourful Ecletic Avenue birch wood trays.
As the name suggests, this avenue houses a range of archetypal British homes from various eras, all the way from the Georgian townhouse to the contemporary modular home, & complete with matching modes of transport. The trays are made in Sweden from layers of birch wood (the masters of the wooden tray it would seem), and come in two sizes, large in process blue or 70s green, and the small one in blood orange.
We also have a few PWANP mugs in stock at the moment, and for the young (or not so young) architectural enthusiast, a colouring-in book of British 'architectural masterpieces'.

We have a new batch of stripey woollen goodies in the shop from Lindsay (aka The Black Rabbit) - including lavender bod keyrings, media mittens (for your phone or ipod), stripey lavender hearts, and Stripey Pipey & Bare Bear (above) in some lovely new colour combinations.

Bear Bare, aswell as being extremely cute, is also baby friendly -meaning one of his close relatives has been pulled & prodded (and other things that you're better off not thinking about by somebody in a white coat) just to prove he's a fit companion for the smallest of the little people.

Well, now been back from our hols for a week and a half now (went to Stockholm & Helsinki but more on that at a later date) - so about time I showed you some of the new things that have been appearing in the shop in the last wee while. Confession now.... such is my own dread at being without a cuppa I have a bit of a habit of stashing the odd teabag or two in various pockets or bags (which invariably end up as a heap of tea leaves in amongst other pocket debris or falling at my feet when searching for change at a busy checkout) so I for one can see the utter brilliance in encapsulating an actual teabag into a badge and pinning it to yourself! (see below). Well done Nikki!!

A new delivery of felt-covered notebooks by Shetland designer/maker Donna Smith are now on our shelves at boo vake.

Beautifully made from pressed felt, with a quality (removable) hard-back notebook cum sketchbook inside. All made by Donna in her home studio on the island of Burra in Shetland.

Took advantage of the lovely weather and went out west at the weekend to the Kintyre Peninsula (around the Tarbert area) - and had a wander along the Crinan Canal in the sun.

Nothing beats the west coast of Scotland when the sun comes out (for me anyhow). Thanks to our very own Wills & Kate for letting us crash their holiday.

We've had quite a few new arrivals at boo vake this week including a new batch of 'hollow' lighting and 'polyrap' bins from Edinburgh based designers Blue Marmalade.

'Hollow' is a versatile two-tone light that can either stand on it's edge, lie on it's side or can be suspended from a hook. We currently have a few in orange/yellow and white/red. And like all Blue Marmalade's products are made in Britain and designed with a strong consideration for the environment - both in using as few materials as possible and in making sure that those materials are recyclable at the end of their useable life. And the best bit - you put them together yourself! Actually they are incredibly easy to assemble, and come with an energy saving bulb included!

And this is the new style 'polyrap' wastepaper bin in zingy yellow, newly folded into 3d form (from one sheet of recycleable plastic) by yours truly! Hurrah!

Last Sunday we had glorious weather here in Perth (like everywhere else in the country I imagine) so myself and the other half got the bikes out and had a run up the Tay and Almond, via popping into his work at Inveralmond. On the way back to Perth we stopped off along the river opposite Scone Palace, plonked ourselves on the grass and shared a bottle of Ossian in the sun. Bliss! And then he asked me to marry him. Which was a bit of a shock.-----------------------------------

Now, we've been together 8 years now so some may say 'what took you so long?' but half of us has never really hankered after marriage and the other has been there before in a past life in another land so any reference to marriage has only ever been discussed with the prefix 'hypothetically in a parallel universe.....'

So after initial bewilderment, followed by much giggling, quacking of ducks and a little wetness around the eyes, I found myself saying a big old yes. The 'ring' was a beautiful brooch by Sarah Spalding that I had been admiring a couple of days before at the re-opening of the Tayberry Gallery.

But don't worry, I won't be filling this blog with wedding(y) things, for aswell as not having the shoes, clothes & make-up genes, I seem to be missing the wedding one too. We'll just try to keep it as simple as possible and get there in our own way at some time. But here are some old photos I dug out at home.....

My parents wedding in the 60s, flanked by my Gran Irvine on the left and my Gran Uist on the right (both grandpas absent, Grandpa Uist because he and my gran would take it in turn to leave the croft to go to their 6 daughters' weddings, can't remember where Grandpa Irvine was). Strangely enough they got married in Perth, even though neither had any connection with here, and had their wedding 'do' on the same street as boo vake is now.

My aunt & uncle's weding (also in Perth I think) with my mum (on right) and her twin sister as bridesmaids. Grandpa Uist's turn, that's him looking dapper in the hat. I think the pipers are great uncles.

This is our new 'I like you' cushion from Swedish born illustrator & printmaker Karin Åkesson. It has been hand-screen printed in dark grey ink onto a thick natural linen (with the same fabric front and back), a concealed zip at the base and a woven label at the front saying "Made with love by Karin Åkesson". Karin studied illustration at Brighton University before going on to do a MA at the Royal College of Art, and now lives in London. We have a new batch of ceramic reliefs from Fife based artist Hilke MacIntyre in boo vake! I'm sure I've said this before but I do love Hilke's work (she's also a very talented painter and printmaker as well as ceramicist) and it's so great to have some new pieces in the shop. Each one comes from a numbered edition of 50 and can be hung on the wall or propped on a shelf (the smallest ones can quite happily stand up on their own).

More wildlife now. This time in the shape of the new Stag lightshade from Lush Designs. This ones a biggie (measuring about 46cm in diameter and 34cm deep) and features a magestic stag, flapping pheasants, and some rather fierce (but clueless) dogs. We have the big one (pendant) in this pale blue and a smaller version (for a lamp) in taupe.

Also new from Lush are these cat storage tins featuring some rather fetching felines having a tea party!

And new to boo vake these delicious fruit & veg napkins - with brussel sprouts, carrots, beetroot, & rasberries on a nice crisp white cotton. They measure a generous 39cm x 39cm and come boxed in mixed sets of 4 (as pictured above).

Hmmm....ok, so Spring may not have sprung in Perth quite yet. Just going to ignore the alternating flurries of snow, sleet, and ice-cold rain outside the window, and celebrate the imminent coming of less sludgy times regardless. Helped along no end by the arrival of some papery goodness designed by Madeleine Rogers (aka Mibo).

Meet our Forest Friends. I've just made up a set of these and they are now sitting most resplendent in our window. They come as flats sheets which you cut out yourself, and with the help of a bit of glue (or double-sided tape as I used) are transformed into super-cute 3d friends with little bobbly heads.

If you're more of a big animal kind of person then maybe The Wid Bunch would be more your thing.

And for lovers of tea-towels.......

.....which can be used for the drying of the dishes OR alternatively cut up and stitched to produced these fine little chaps below!

michelle mason's melamine

You could be forgiven for thinking spring has actually sprung here in Perth today. For the first time in months I've been able to have the shop door open (which I like very much), the sun has indeed been shining (in between showers) and up until a few minutes ago I was without scarf.

A little similiar to how it was in London way back in mid January when myself and my other half went all alfresco outside a riverside pub. No mind the quizzical looks and that everybody else had chosen to be inside by a roaring fire (or the sound of a pneumatic sander filling our heads). The sun was shining, it was an acceptable temperature, and we are Scottish. No more explanation needed.

It was during that trip that I eventually got to see Michelle Mason's lovely melamine tumblers & mugs in person. I've always been drawn to brightly coloured melamine, and especially melamine made in Britain (if it's going to be around for a long while then it's got to be something worth treasuring) - so it's so good to finally have Michelle's tumblers & mugs here in the shop.

These fellas by the very talented Jane Foster are now gracing our shelves at boo vake - and I can't tell you how lovely they are! Beautifully crisp screen-printed faces with a great mixture of vintage and retro fabrics (quite a few Orla Kiely fabrics too) and no two the same.

A good sentiment indeed from Stuart Gardiner with his Drop Scones Not Bombs shopping bag - now hanging up in boo vake!

Comes complete with a little recipe card for the aforementioned drop scone (or just a pancake if you're in Scotland) traditionally made on a girdle (a griddle in England) - and not to be confused with the girdle scone which is quite a different beast altogether! Much as I like the odd cupcake (or two) give me a pancake (drop scone), rock bun, or girdle scone for that matter any day!

I'm just back from a couple of days visiting family on the Black Isle (very nice train journey down this morning with sun and a couple of hours of reading time - bliss) to find the postie waiting with a heap of packages. These very scrumptious teatowels by illustrator Charlotte Farmer (for New House Textiles) have just arrived in the shop! For biscuit lovers (and who isn't) her Family Favourites teatowel has a impressive array of biscuit superstars upon it (malted milk, pink wafer, jammy dodger, custard cream, bourbon, nice, tunnocks teacake,.....need I go on!). Not one there I wouldn't eagerly swap a watery clementine for this dark, blustery, and sopping wet Scottish Friday afternoon.

Equally fabulous is the Snow Globes teatowel. Snow globes from around the world, and in the bottom left corner, the best bit, we have none other than The King himself! (As someone who covered their walls in Elvis posters when their contemporaries were all Wham and Duran Duran, this pleases me greatly).

After a bit of a break to enjoy the festivities boo vake opened it's doors again last Saturday - just in time for another big fall of snow (enormous thanks to the kind soul/council worker(?) who cleared the pavement all the way to the shop - was SO appreciated I can tell you!) - and with the weather seemingly warming up a touch we are well and truly back in the swing of things.

But no sooner are we back than we're off again. In the pursuit of lovely new things for the shop this time (and they call it work). Next week we shall be closed on Tuesday 18th & Wednesday 19th, and tomorrow (Saturday 15th) we will be open from 12-5pm.

Well, despite the snow we have managed to keep the doors of boo vake well and truly open throughout (having cut a path through to the High Street with our trusty dustpan) and although it looks like the weather is not about to warm up any time soon there seems to be a lot more movement out there on the streets again. Hurrah!

With the cold weather comes the inevitable sniffles and sneezes, and luckily we are on hand with these new super cute hankies from Sukie - which are now in the shop! We have Elephant, Daddy Bird, Octopus & Tiger.

all snowed in...

We're all snowed in here in Perth today. The schools are all closed, as are many shops & businesses, and there's not much movement out on the streets as the snow continues to fall.
And with no end in site for the big chill, what else is there to do but show-off some of the cosy wearable woollies we have in the shop at the moment from the likes of Donna Wilson, Erin McIntyre, Yungi, Catherine Tough, & Hilary grant! All the details of which can be found here.

We also have a range of very beautiful handwoven lambswool, cashmere & silk scarves by Shetland weaver Emma Blain (aka Aamos designs) which would make very special gifts indeed (£40/£45), and other lovely designs from Donna Wilson (tree cloud, rainbow, & pinstripe scarves, and tip-top hats).

lightnight... and a late opening on friday

Tomorrow night (Friday 26th) is the kick-off of lightnight (em...weekend) here in Perth. Which in turn is part of the year long Perth 800 celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth. To celebrate this there are lots of light type events happening across the toon - 'not only will key landmarks be illuminated, you will find dance, music, installations, exhibitions, storytelling, dramatised walks, talks, treasure hunts and much, much more' as it says in the blurb.

Here at boo vake we will be joining in by staying open to the grand old time of 8 o'clock. It will be cold out there so if you feel like joining us for respite and a wee winter warmer you know where to find us!

A small departure for us here at boo vake (as we don't usually take on licensed products, preferring to go straight to the maker/designer) but we couldn't resist the new goodies papercut artist Rob Ryan has designed for Wild & Wolf (I know, shame on us!). A few pics from our wee cycle/camping trip to Islay & Jura last week. Despite the much wetness, damp camping, brain freeze, and looking like a midden for 3 days, this is what made it all worthwhile.....

Had a really nice time, lovely scenery and met some lovely people (between the wetness). The final night we gave up on the camping and got a room in the Port Askaig Hotel.....

.....but just to show you it ain't all glamour this was our first night's camping. Tent put up in the dark in the Kennacraig ferry terminal carpark. Four tent pegs and tied to the car!

I try not to act on impulse (too much) when looking for new things for the shop but that all went out the window when I saw these screen-printed owls & cushions by Amy & Christian from Robin and Mould. And they certainly don't disappoint - beautifully made and even more lovely in real life!

Everything is hand screen-printed in their Wiltshire Studio using water based inks on a heavy linen/cotton mix. The owls come in either mustard yellow or teal (with teal or purple felt wings & feet) and are printed on both sides. The 'dream big little one' cushion comes in teal with a pure linen dark navy blue backing.

Had a great few days in Islay earlier this week (despite the damp camping and midges) but now back to a bit of catch-up.....

We now have some lovely woollen baby blankets by Mini McGhee here at boo vake. Mini McGhee is Glasgow School of Art graduate Nicola McGhee who, after a time in New York as a designer for Gap, has returned to her roots and is growing her range of contemporary baby blankets & nursery accessories. All are made in Scotland from supersoft pure new wool making them that bit special - and as such, Nicola is especially keen that they be handed down to future generations (and it says just that on the label!).

perthshire open studios

On Sunday we headed off to visit a few of the studios/workshops open for this year's Perthshire Open Studios. In the end we only managed a tiny bit of the orange and blue routes (as the area covered is so enormous) - which luckily included the workshops of woodturner extraordinaire Angus Clyne (no 84) and nearby sculptural ceramicist Shona Leith (no83), both of who do the most amazing work, and are lovely people to boot.

Beyond POS, for those wanting to benefit from their expertise, Shona holds regular ceramic classes at the Birnam Institute and Angus offers woodturning tuition in his workshop.

POS runs all this week and continues into next weekend (some are open in the evenings too). For more details check the website, or pop into the shop and pick up a brochure.
ps. Special mention also to boo vake favourite Ceri White (no75). Well worth a visit!

Apparently life began for me on Monday (why do I still feel about twelve?!) - and to mark this coming of age I decided to ask much admired designer & printmaker Alison Hardcastle to come up with a design especially for boo vake. The brief was pretty loose (one colour, simple shape, orange or turquoise) and in the end I found it so difficult to choose just one of Alison's designs I went for two!! And here they are! Hope you like.

Over the next wee while one or other of these designs will be popping up on our signs, postcards, business cards and other shop paraphernalia. Thanks Alison!

Resurrecting the old boo vake 'take a hint!! 'service we now have the 'things I like' book! Aimed at all those customers who are forever buying all their favourite boo vake things for everybody else but whose friends/family are frankly clueless when it comes to them.

And it works like this - you write down you favourite boo vake things in our wee book and we just carelessly leave it lying around the shop for anybody to see! Yep, that could be your partner, friends, family, workmates.... Who knows, it might just work!

cycling in Barra & the Uists

Our recent cycling/camping holiday in the Western Isles. We took the ferry from Oban to Barra, cycled over to Vatersay, back up through Barra, ferry to Eriskay, over the causeway and up through South Uist, around Benbecula and Grimsay, and finally around the west and north of North Uist before getting the ferry from Lochmaddy to Skye. Unlike most cyclists we met (who were getting from A to B the quickest route possible) we took in as many diversions as we could and had a fantastic time.

Top tips for Hebridean cycle happiness....

1- Go with the wind if you can. We were very lucky to have the wind behind us up through South Uist. The week before it was coming from the north.

2- Let cars get past. Lots of single track roads so stop at the side when you see a car coming (or hear one behind you). You're on holiday, others have places to go.

3- Salar flaky smoked salmon, Kallin scallops, Hebridean Smokehouse, MacLeans oatcakes, Am Politician - Eriskay (don't be put off by the exterior), Polochar Inn, tea stops at Kildonan Cafe & Museum, Claddach Kirkibost Centre/Cafe, Taigh Chearsabhagh/Cafe,.......

Been having a few computer problems here of late (hence the lack of posts) - but whilst it's possible - here are some images of the fabulous Fun Makes Good Pi.Pouffe similiar to the one we have in the shop at the moment. Our one is the extra tall version so it a bit taller than the one shown. At 50cm x 50cm x 40cm it's the perfect height for sitting on or for putting your feet up on (trust me I've tried it out). Made from leather, cotton and hand dyed cotton satin patchwork (and it contains a removable bean bag liner that can be topped up in future with polystyrene beans if desired).

Jazz night at Blair Drummond Safari Park. Music, picnic, penguins, dancing, dodgems, & the big blue wavy slide thing. Very exciting! Finishing off with high-kicking to New York, New York.

Atholl Highlanders Ball and Atholl Gathering (the following day) in Blair Atholl. All the usual events (dancing, tossing the caber, tug-of-war etc) with a bit of wrestling and vintage Skoda pulling thrown in. Ken (my man) can just be seen behind the guy with the big drum (and up top 3rd from right in the 'Highlanders' race) -whilst I retreat up the hill to feed my hangover chips and curry sauce.

meet the maker evening

A pic from last night's meet the maker evening with ceramic artist Ceri White. Ceri even did an interview with Perth FM during the evening. What a pro! Thanks to everybody who managed to make it along.

Ceri (above) with some of her work behind her. On display are lots of small pieces that we don't usually have here at boo vake including many small hanging tiles, soap dishes, and a whole range of ceramic badges with owls, dogs, abstract designs & demi-wave ladies on them! We also have the very striking big brother of the urban mosaic - measuring about 33cm x 33cm. The (mini) exhibition will run now until the shop closes on Wednesday May 26th (yes, that's next Wednesday!).

Technically Lorraine's not really a new supplier as we have had her work here before (many years ago) but so glad to see her back making beautiful things again.

ceri white mini exhibition

It's May!!... and Perth Festival of the Arts will soon be upon us. This year boo vake will be taking part with a mini exhibition by Perthshire ceramic artist Ceri White between 20th-26th May. You will no doubt be familiar with Ceri's fabulous dog/horse/stag 'flock' wall tiles and colourful mix'n'match ceramic coasters if you are a regular visitor to the shop. Ceri will be showing a range of work not usually shown here at boo vake and there will be an opportunity to commission work from her direct on the evening of May 20th. Fancy a tile made of your favourite pooch or have a tiling project in mind - now is your chance!

Now the timing may not be the best (although it's still pretty chilly in Perth) but we now have these fabulous make your mitts kits from Dundee based Hilary Grant in the shop. Each kit contains four knitted & felted lambswool panels, lambswool yarn in 4 colors, and illustrated instructions & templates to make your own entirely unique pair of woolly mittens. Love them! A belated thank you to the marvellous Sarah & Graeme who very kindly looked after boo vake for me on the Saturday (10th) when I was away enjoying the tail end of a break in the Czech Republic. This was their second time helping out in the shop (the first being when I fell off a chair and broke my knee a few years ago) and apparently it still hasn't put them off. Thank you both - much appreciated!
