new ceramics

This week we got a delivery of beakers and jugs in from ceramic artist Julia Smith. Julia works from her studio in Ardersier near Inverness producing hand-thrown earthenware, which she then decorates with leadfree glazes & decals. I decided to go handle-less for these as they fit so beautifully in the hand that handles just seemed unnecessary. I think they would be perfect for drinking whisky out of (complete with water jug) or perhaps for milk & sugar (the beakers could easily double as a bowl).

I always love to see how things are made & Julia has a fabulous online video giving an insight into her process of making  - which you can see here. Well worth a watch!

wine drinkers gather round...

Whether you fancy yourself as a wine buff or, like me, just like drinking the stuff and haven't really a scooby beyond the general (and generally ignored) rule of drinking red with red meat and white with chicken & fish,  then we have THE tea-towel for you!! Following on from showing us the way with seasonal foods, designer Stuart Gardiner has now turned his attention to enhancing our wine/food appreciation!

There's a version for red & white wine lovers, and they are jam-packed with recommendations for which wines go best with which food/dishes/tastes along with other useful pointers, and which combinations you should absolutely avoid! All that and it dries your dishes too!! Would make a perfect present for just about anyone who partakes in the drinking of the old vino (maybe with a bottle wrapped up inside).

people will always need.... trays!

I'm a big fan of trays and a big admirer of the work of British designers Hannah Dipper & Robin Farquar (aka People Will Always Need Plates), and happily these two weaknesses of mine can be well and truly satisfied with the arrival in the shop of PWANP's wonderfully colourful Ecletic Avenue birch wood trays.
As the name suggests, this avenue houses a range of archetypal British homes from various eras, all the way from the Georgian townhouse to the contemporary modular home, & complete with matching modes of transport. The trays are made in Sweden from layers of birch wood (the masters of the wooden tray it would seem), and come in two sizes, large in process blue or 70s green, and the small one in blood orange.
We also have a few PWANP mugs in stock at the moment, and for the young (or not so young) architectural enthusiast, a colouring-in book of British 'architectural masterpieces'.

Some very lovely new things we have in from Edinburgh designer Susie Brown (aka susiemaroon). Really love these phone covers (above & below). They come in either leather or felt, and every one is beautifully presented in card with a little bit of info about Susie/susiemaroon on the back.

Some very stylish Respectable Spectacle cases. They come in three styles - catseye, 1920s readers & aviators.

The Biro bookmark. Comes in four different colourways to keep you in your place in style. I'm sure you could even stick it behind your ear between pages.

The Inveralmond Brewery shop is opening it's doors this Saturday! There's bottles, gift packs & mini-casks containing a variety of Inveralmond's ales available (think there might be their Sunburst Pilsner too). The guys (including my other half) will be there from 11am until 4pm.

Well, despite the snow we have managed to keep the doors of boo vake well and truly open throughout (having cut a path through to the High Street with our trusty dustpan) and although it looks like the weather is not about to warm up any time soon there seems to be a lot more movement out there on the streets again. Hurrah!

With the cold weather comes the inevitable sniffles and sneezes, and luckily we are on hand with these new super cute hankies from Sukie - which are now in the shop! We have Elephant, Daddy Bird, Octopus & Tiger.

Aah don't you love him?! He's the new Sentinel robot clock we have in the shop from The Original Metal Box Company.

Also new in are these very clever solar-powered nightnightlights. See that smiley sun above the robot, well that's backed by a little solar panel which you attach to a sunny window and during the day the little night light charges up and at night you pop it back into the back of your cheery robot or elephant to give a reassuring back-glow.

And with spring having kind of sprung and gardening back on the agenda we have this rather lovely Harvest seed cabinet (herbs & spices cabinet or CD cabinet if you like).

Robots, elephants & vegetables all designed by the renowned '60s designer Cifford Richards (who has much of his work from the '60s & '70s in the collection of the V&A) and is still very much (alive &) designing today.
